A SEMI TRAILER truck and a motorcycle collided near the I-25 north interchange, claiming the life of the cycle driver. The truck driver was uninjured. The coroner Leo Lujan sad that cause of death is undetermined until further information from the State Medical Investigator. City Police Officer Billy Romero said that the truck and cycle collided at the far north end of California St. near the freeway. The cycle was traveling south in the northbound lane at the point of collision, Romero said. Citations were not issued. The driver was enroute to Albuquerque. Fire Chief Phil Baca said his department received a call that a semi-truck was on fire. Baca said that the fire started when fuel that spilled from the cycle gas tank ignited with other flammable oils from the truck. The cycle gas tank then ruptured, sending flames into the front end of the truck. The truck fuel tank never did rupture. The truck driver was able to exit the truck before the fire reached the cab.

TWO SOCORRO JUNIOR HIGH School students were among a group of 150 kids from across the state who participated in the Special Winter Olympics. Paul Pino and Dominick Castaneda with sponsor and teacher Marilyn Steinbach, participated in the winter games, and returned home with medals. Steinbach said it was the first time a Socorro school had participated in the Special Winter Olympics. The participants could compete in downhill racing, cross-country skiing and ice skating. It was the first time on skis for the Socorro boys, who both qualified for downhill competition. Pino earned a first-place medal, while Castaneda capped a medal for second place. Opening day ceremonies heralded the start of competition, fun and learning as the children watched a torch ceremony, on skis, by a group of experienced performers. A dance capped off the days activities. The two Socorro boys returned, not only with medals, but with new-found skill on skis, surely one of the more popular winter sports in this area.
