Socorro Warriors Soccer Team picks up two wins in last week’s play
The SHS Warriors won two in a row out of the three games they played last week. The soccer team had solid 4-0 wins over the Robertson Cardinals and the Belen Eagles.
After a slow start to the season, the Warriors have been finding their rhythm as a team.
In their first four games the Warriors only scored two goals and came away with four losses. However, it should be noted that three of those teams they lost to are very strong teams that still only have one loss each on the season. They even took East Mountain all the way to a second overtime in their fourth game before losing 2-1. After that, the Warriors scored an impressive 11 goals in their three games last week.
Warriors soccer grabbed its first win of the season at home against the Cardinals on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Easton Montoya scored the first goal of the game off a corner kick about three minutes in. At about 23 minutes, Kyle Berger got the second goal for the Warriors. In the second half, sophomore Derek Acosta scored two goals for the team.
Head Coach Fred Berger had expected to be able to win this one against a struggling Robertson team, but he still reminded his team they had to show up and be focused.
“I think that we came out a little lethargic. We were stronger than Robertson, but we didn’t come out strong, showing our potential. So our first half was really slow. We talked to them. Second half, they looked a lot better,” Berger said. “I’m proud of the kids, they did well. They were a little hard on themselves during the game. That’s something we have to work on, but I think they showed up really well. We got the win.”
The Warriors got their second win of the season two days later playing in Belen against the Eagles. Ben Watkins, Kyle Berger, and Javi Leon each scored goals in that 4-0 victory, and Kyle Berger had an assist as well. The other goal was an own goal that the Eagles scored on themselves.
“Much better team play!” Fred Berger said after the Belen win.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, they came up just short against the Bosque Bobcats, again. The Warriors played against the Bobcats in the first weekend of the season at the Bosque Tournament. The Warriors lost that first match-up 2-1 after having had the lead for a while; that was their third game in two days. Last Saturday, they lost 4-3 to the Bobcats, the third game for the Warriors in the week. Kyle Berger had a goal and an assist, Javi Leon scored a goal, Derek Acosta got an assist, and sophomore Avery Timmons scored her first goal of the season.
