Alamo Dreamers: one team, one dream

Ten girls from Alamo, aged 10 to 14, make up the Alamo Dreamers traveling basketball team. The team is unique in that all the girls are from the Alamo Navajo Reservation, and they all attend the Alamo Navajo Community School.

“The best part of the team is the bond that the girls and parents have formed. It’s more than basketball, it’s family. Having that support and close relationship and trust off the court makes the chemistry on the court an admirable experience to witness.” Delfina Monte and Evonne Guerro wrote in an email.

Monte and Guerro, parents of some of the girls on the team, said basketball has always been a passion for the girls.

“When the Alamo Navajo Wellness Center started basketball as a recreational sport, kids joined by the dozens. Soon it became only a handful of girls remained. They stayed committed to each other and to themselves.” Guerro and Monte wrote in an email.

The team began entering AAU tournaments, which they said were initially rough.

“ I believe they lost their first game 2-60. They went the entire year with a losing record. However, they never let the losses keep them down; they kept showing up and putting in the work. They improved quickly and this year they have a winning record. They actually just took 1st place in the Santa Fe Showdown this past weekend in the 14U division.” Guerro and Monte said.

The team travels to places such as Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Los Lunas, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Mescalero. Coming up on August 1st, they’ll be traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii, to play in an all-Indigenous tournament.

The goal for the Alamo Dreamers is to make a state championship appearance one day.

“While basketball is what’s bringing them all together, it’s actually more than basketball. They are learning lifelong lessons whether they realize it or not. They’re learning responsibility, work ethic, respect, sportsmanship, commitment, being a good teammate,a friend, and family. One team, one dream.” Guerro and Monte said.

The community can support the team by making donations via cash app $AlamoGirlsAAU, via Zelle at apachito.miranda@gmail.com, or via check.
