The 15-4 Lady Cougars have been simply rolling through their district matches. They are 7-0 in their district and have only lost one set during those matches. Last week, they had 3-0 wins at home over the Vaughn Lady Eagles and the Mountainair Lady Mustangs.

The Alamo team has seen a big improvement from last year’s 11-11 overall and 6-2 district team. Second year Head Coach Lyndy Torres has worked hard with these student-athletes, and the efforts are paying off.

“I have enjoyed the season overall. I feel that I have grown along with the team. My biggest dream for each of the girls is that they know how much I care for them and only want them to be best prepared for life’s challenges. I consistently emphasize communication, responsibility, accountability and integrity. They always hear me say that they are a student first, then an athlete.” Torres said.

The last loss for the Lady Cougars was about a month ago against their neighbors, the Magdalena Steers. Since then, the Alamo varsity squad bounced back big time and really worked on strategies to strengthen as individuals and as a team.

“As a team, the girls have learned the meaning of teamwork, how to work through tough times by changing their mindset and how to pick themselves back up. This makes me very proud of them. During games, if they were struggling mentally, they learned to take feedback, reset and bring their game to the floor.” Torres said.

Helping to lead the way are the team’s two seniors, Tisha Mexicano and Dora Dominguez. The Oct. 30 match against Mountainair was Senior Night for the Lady Cougars. The Alamo community honored Mexicano and Dominguez after the match, along with senior team manager Kyra Apache. Their strong leadership reflects in the team’s current successes and is making an impression on the younger teammates who will be leading the Lady Cougars for years to come.

“I have two seniors playing and they have been great leaders for the team. They execute their skills and are able to work through tough plays. The greatest gift they have is their friendship on and off the floor. They keep the team laughing, growing and enjoying the game.” Torres said.

With only one match left on the season, they are hoping to wrap up their undefeated district run. They will play at home versus Corona on Thursday, Nov. 6, with junior high playing at 4 p.m. and varsity playing after. Then they will get to see what their playoff picture is going to look like.

“I definitely have nerves as we get closer to playoffs, but I am confident that no matter what the outcome, these young ladies will work hard, apply the skills they have been working on and most of all have fun!” Torres said.
