Socorro Warriors

Socorro’s Warriors are 4-7 on the year after dropping three straight contests, but believe it or not, they are the most improved team in the county. That trio of losses has come against teams that are a combined 28-8 and came against Legacy (9-4), Mesilla Valley Christian School (8-0), and (11-4).

Things don’t get much easier for the Warriors, who have road games up next against Escalante (7-5), 4A Valencia (7-8), and 4A Moriarty (6-8).

Socorro returns for a pair of home games on Jan. 23 against Tularosa (7 p.m.) and on Jan. 25 against NMMI at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Warriors

The Lady Warriors of Socorro are still looking for their first win of the basketball season. They will travel to Moriarty on Jan. 18 before returning home to face Sandia Prep on Jan. 21 in a 6:30 p.m. game.

Socorro also hosts Tularosa on Jan. 28 (6:30 p.m.) and Silver on Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m.

Alamo Cougars

The Alamo Navajo Cougars (8-5) are on a roll. They have won five of their last six games and improved to 8-5 on the year. After winning the Striking Eagle Invitational at the end of December, the Cougars took a tough 56-55 road loss to Mescalero Apache and bounced back with a 79-53 win against To’hajiilee.

The Cougars have a light schedule for the remainder of January, with tournament games starting against Mountainair on Jan. 23 and a road game against Hondo Valley on Jan. 31.

Alamo Lady Cougars

The Alamo Navajo Lady Cougars are 4-8 on the year and have won two of their last three games with a 37-35 win at To’hajiilee and a 48-40 win over Animas.

Now, the Lady Cougars turn their attention to district play, with a tournament tipoff against Quemado and a Jan. 23 home game against Mountainair. They also play host to Reserve on Jan. 24.

Magdalena Steers

No. 3 Magdalena is 12-4 overall but 4-3 in its last seven games, but the Steers’ preseason schedule has been brutal with matchups against Texico, Fort Sumner/House and Eunice,

The Steers topped Jal 50-45 on Jan. 11 and hit some road bumps against some of the state’s top teams. With a 4-3 mark since December 12, they dive into district play on the road against Animas on Jan. 23. They have a home date against Cliff on Jan. 25 (2:30 p.m.).

Magdalena Girls

Magdalena suffered a pair of losses as the Steers advanced into Class 2A basketball, with matchups against Eunice and Jal.

At 12-4 on the year, Magdalena is right where it wants to be as it enters district play against Animas on Jan. 23 and at home against Cliff at 1 p.m. on Jan. 23.
