Big potentional for Zimmerly track home meet
As she embarks on her second year as the girls’ track coach at Socorro High School, Beth Cadol continues to embody a spirit of humility and optimism.
“I’m more acutely aware of how much I don’t know. However, I’m also excited because I know the potential of the kids that we’re working with,” Cadol said.
Cadol said this year’s team consists of two seniors, no juniors, several sophomores, and over a dozen talented freshmen.
She said the focus is on consistency and effort during practice.
“My seniors are great leaders. I also expect them to make state finals. They were there last year, too. Sophomores are strong athletes. I think we have a lot of potential, certainly within our district competition, and we’re already looking at combinations of relays and ways to make the state meet even more profitable.” Cadol said.
Last year, several eighth graders made the state finals and are now freshmen on the team.
Coach Tony Baker, a New Mexico Tech student who played sports throughout high school and college, believes sports are an excellent opportunity to learn life lessons.
Last fall, Baker was hired to coach the boys’ cross-country team, and when the boys’ track position opened up, it was a natural position for him to take.
“I think when I took this job this year, the number one thing that I kept mentioning is I want to make a team that Socorro can be proud of,” Baker said. “Obviously, athletic achievements are something that can propel you there.”
However, Baker said it’s just as essential to hold the team accountable for their grades, attendance and expectations that they come to practice with the mentality to work hard.
“I think both Beth and I have kind of had that mindset that if we can take care of and build responsibility, work ethic and those kinds of things that athletic achievements will follow,” Baker said.
Baker said the team is young but has experienced seniors with proven talent. He believes the team’s main strength lies in athletes eager to compete and participate in various events.

The Warriors kicked off the season in Hot Springs on March 7 with two automatic state qualifying marks. Sophomore Breanne Lucero cleared 7’6” in the pole vault, and senior Isaiah Ocampo threw 123’11” in the discus.
Centennial Hawk
On March 15, in Las Cruces, despite the meet being cut short by the weather, the team achieved several personal records. Including Allison Harris, who improved her 400m time by 8 seconds to 1:15
“Las Cruces was going great, and then it was canceled about two-thirds of the way through because of a little sleet that blew through,” Baker said.
Cadol said that when they got back on the bus, it was sunny again, and it was disappointing to have the last events canceled, especially when the kids were doing so well. Because the kids couldn’t show all their talents both coaches are especially excited to see what their teams do at the home meet.
Zimmerly Relay
Coach Cadol is particularly excited about the potential of the girls’ four-by-800 relay team, which is aiming to break the school record at the upcoming home meet.
She believes the girls are within reach of setting the record.
The home meet, The Zimmerly Relays is named after Coach Chuck Zimmerly, who has been working with Socorro’s athletes for over 50 years and is still out at practice every day coaching relay hand-offs and sprinting technique.
Cadol expects the team to be excited and possibly a little distracted when competing at home. She said it can be challenging to coach at a home meet because she is largely focused on running the event and ensuring everything goes smoothly. As a result, Cadol has minimal opportunity for actual coaching, which is not her favorite situation.
“However, the kids have done a really good job of getting themselves where they need to be, getting the relay teams ready and warmed up, and nobody has missed anything so far this season because they haven’t been paying attention,” Cadol said. “They just have to rise to the occasion when their coaches are distracted and busy and be sure to show up for their events.”
She said it is also fun for the kids to perform in front of their home crowd, friends, and family.
“And so I think there’s probably some heightened expectations that they put on themselves. As a coach, I want them to show up and do everything that I know, that they can do all the time, and I’m always proud of them, so I don’t think that I need to put any more expectations on them to do that for themselves,” Cadol said
Baker said he believed most of the kids who were dealing with injuries should be ready to go.
“I’m really looking forward to what we can show on Saturday,” Baker said. “From a competing standpoint, obviously, with a home meet, you want to try to do a little bit more to win it. And so I think that’s where their mindset is.”
