The Braves football team finished up their season with a game against the Snell Miners on Wednesday, Oct. 15. It was a defensive battle that saw no score until about halfway through the second half. The Miners found the endzone to take a 6-0 lead, but the Braves defense held out on the two-point conversion attempt.

The second half continued to be all defense, and went scoreless until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. A lapse in an otherwise great Braves’ defense allowed the Miners to score one more touchdown, but the Braves defense stopped the two-point conversion again. The final score was 12-0 for the Miners.

Braves Head Coach Julian Avalos and his assistant coaches, Ryan and Reyes Romero, built up this team and saw vast improvements throughout this season. Without a youth contact football program here in town, many of the players didn’t have this kind of experience prior to the current season.

“I think we made some improvements at times, but us not having a youth program and not enough kids showing up in the summer reflect on our season. I learned a lot about our kids and am already looking forward to summer training. We have some really good kids coming back.” Avalos said.

Avalos was always looking to get all of his players as much playing time and experience as possible throughout the season, standing up for the team, and finding positive words for everyone involved with the SMS football program.

“I want to thank Ms. Samantha for everything she did for us this year and my coaches for showing up every day with a great attitude and staying positive. Two things that stood out to me the most was we only had two kids that quit the program, and after the first day of practice our kids respected themselves and their teammates.” Avalos said.

Samantha Vivian-Gonzales is the Community Schools/Innovation Coordinator for Socorro Consolidated Schools, and she prepared game programs with players names, among many other things.
