Friday, Sept. 19, was a busy night for football in Socorro County.

The Alamo Cougars hosted the neighboring Magdalena Steers team in a modified match. Alamo normally plays eight-man while Magdalena plays six-man. The Socorro Warriors played at home against the Ruidoso Warriors.

Alamo Cougars host the neighboring Magdalena Steers

Stormy weather delayed the start of this modified game one hour. Clouds broke and let in some sunshine when the players ran out onto the field to start the game. The formatting for this game had eight players on each side when Alamo was on offense, but only six players per side when Magdalena was on offense. That allowed the teams to run their offenses normally with their set plays, but defensively they had to make adjustments.

It was said before the game that Magdalena was fast on the outside, and they took advantage of that all game. The Steers capitalized on almost every offensive play, even on some defensive take-aways. Meanwhile, the Cougars would start to get their offense rolling only to be stymied by turnovers and penalties.

The final score was 60-0, with play ending at half-time due to the mercy rule. Magdalena Head Coach Danny Daniels gave a shout-out to senior Ky Stephens for his multiple touchdowns in the game.

“I don’t know how many touchdowns he ended up having, but he had a good game.” Daniels said.

The Alamo Cougars are now 0-5 and will play a district game at home against the 0-4 Dulce Hawks on Friday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.

The 3-1 Magdalena Steers varsity team is scheduled to play at home versus the Animas Panthers on Friday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m.. The Animas game will be their first district game of the season.

“Well, it’s our first district game, so that’s important. It’s also homecoming. We’re happy about that, and we want to make sure that we make a statement with our district teams.” Daniels said.

Socorro Warriors take a loss in their first district game

The Socorro Warriors hosted the Ruidoso Warriors on a wet and muggy Friday night last week. The Ruidoso squad took control right away and racked up 36 points before Socorro could get on the board. The Socorro Warriors then countered with two rushing touchdowns and a two-point conversion, but that was all they could get before the Ruidoso offense took control again. Play stopped during the fourth quarter once Ruidoso passed the 50-point lead mark for mercy rule. The final score was 65-14.

The 0-5 Warriors play another district game at home versus the 1-3 New Mexico Military Institute Colts on Friday, Sept. 26. All remaining regular season games for the Warriors are district games, and Socorro is now 0-1 in its district.
