Socorro County Football - Two more wins last week for county teams
Friday, Oct. 3, saw two of the Socorro County football teams win again.
The Alamo Cougars and the Magdalena Steers didn’t win by mercy rule this time, but they still pulled off important district wins.
The Socorro team lost in Truth or Consequences to the Hot Springs Tigers on Thursday, Oct. 2.
Magdalena Steers win by only three in a close one
Magdalena played their closest game of this season so far against the Mountainair Mustangs last Friday, Oct. 3. Last year they lost 66-30 to the Mustangs, so Steers Head Coach Danny Daniels knew it was going to be a competitive game this season.
This dramatic, back-and-forth game saw the Mustangs score first and hold the lead for a while. The Mountainair team had leads of 7-0 and 13-6 in the first half. It took a while for the Steers to really get going, but soon they were up 14-13, then 22-13. The Mustangs scored again and were only trailing by three early in the fourth quarter, 22-19. Then the Steers countered to extend their advantage 28-19 with over eight minutes to go. Another Mustangs score cut it back down to a three point gap, 28-25. In the remaining four plus minutes of play, flags flew and people yelled, but no more points were scored. In the end, the Steers held on in a tight one to win 28-25 and move to a 2-0 record in their district.
The 5-1 Steers have a bye week and then are on the road to El Paso, TX, to play against the Da Vinci Dragons on Friday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. This is not a district game, but it looks to be another tough match as the Dragons are also 5-1 on the season.
Alamo Cougars get their second win of the season
The Alamo Cougars came away victorious 42-18 against the Navajo Pine Warriors last Friday, Oct. 3. This puts them at first place with a 2-0 record in their district. With the Northwest team dropping out of their district this year, that leaves just one more district game after a bonus bye week.
“We still got the momentum going. The boys are on fire and ready to take on our last district game with Ramah. They have been showing a lot of improvements in sportsmanship and leadership these past two games. The goal is to keep that mentality with Ramah.” Head Coach Wyatt Billy said after the Navajo Pine game.
The 2-5 Cougars are still planning to play on the road against Ramah on Friday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m. The game was not showing up on the MaxPreps schedule online, but Billy confirmed that it is still on their schedule. The Ramah Mustangs are currently 1-4.
Socorro Warriors suffer another district defeat
The Socorro Warriors traveled to Truth or Consequences Thursday of last week, instead of their usual Friday gameday. The Hot Springs Tigers were victorious in that match-up though, beating the Warriors 41-0 in T or C.
The 0-7 Warriors play another district game in Hatch versus the 3-4 Hatch Valley Bears on Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. Socorro is now 0-3 in its district, with three district games to go this season.
