Socorro County Football
Friday, Oct. 17, saw two of the Socorro County football teams win again. The Alamo Cougars and the Magdalena Steers both won their games on the road. It was a bye week for the Socorro Warriors.
Magdalena Steers win big in Texas
The Steers traveled to El Paso, Texas, to play a nondistrict game against the Da Vinci Dragons on Oct. 17. The Dragons were looking pretty good at 4-2 coming into the game, and Steers Head Coach Danny Daniels gave the Dragons some props.
“We had a great game against a really good team. We traveled a long way for their homecoming, so they wanted us. Their quarterback is talented. Most of their scores were from throwing.” Daniels said.
However, the Dragons were no match for this impressive Steers team that ran to a 74-26 win on the road.
“But we were really prepared. They couldn’t stop our run game. Prescott [Herrera] had five TDs and Ky [Stephens] had three TDs. We threw some scores too. Good overall effort and great team effort.” Daniels said.
Nathan Bruton claimed four passing TDs and Kanaan Stephens said he caught two of those. The Steers have scored an incredible 389 points while only giving up 131 so far in their 6-1 season.
The Steers are first place in their district with a 2-0 record and just one more district game to go. The last regular season game will be at home against the Carrizozo Grizzlies on Friday, Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. The Grizzlies are currently 1-6. The Steers won’t take it lightly, but are hoping to easily extend their six-game winning streak on Friday, which is also their Senior Night. The Steers seniors on this year’s team include Michael Young, Ky Stephens, Matthew Lopez, and Noah Guerro.
Alamo Cougars travel to Ramah and come away as district champs
The Cougars finished up their regular season on a three game winning streak with last Friday’s win in a district game on the road against Ramah on Oct. 17.
“I told the team that the first quarter with Ramah was going to be a battle, but after that first quarter it was going to be our game. After years of hard work and dedication with the Alamo football program, we have our first district championship.” Head Coach Wyatt Billy said.
The Alamo Cougars were victorious over the Ramah Mustangs with a final score of 20-8. Coach Billy and the Cougars are looking forward to the playoffs and beyond after this important win.
“Coaching this group of young men is definitely one for the books. Seeing this team motivate and push each other through the season makes me wonder how successful they will be to overcome challenges later in life. This will be our second state playoff appearance, and as always we are going to continue the momentum of motivation and determination with positivity to our next game.” Billy said.
Alamo is 3-5 overall, but 3-0 in the district where it really counts for them. Now they wait to find out what their playoff match-up is going to look like. The playoff brackets are expected to come out on Sunday, Oct. 26.
Socorro Warriors rest up during their bye week
The Socorro Warriors got a bye week to rest up while the other Socorro county teams played on Friday, Oct. 17.
The 0-8 Warriors play a district game at home versus the 1-7 Cobre Indians on Friday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. Socorro is now 0-4 in its district, with two district games to go this season. Cobre is also winless in the district so far. Socorro Head Coach Derek Smith and the Warriors are still fighting and practicing hard, and they are ready to bring in the win at home for their Senior Night to honor seniors Jaquavis Brawley, Jacob Angel, Miguel Montano and Jaxon Griffith. The Friday game is also Fan Appreciation Night, with free entry.
