Socorro Warriors basketball team
This year’s young team, with seven sophomores on its roster, is on track to improve upon last season’s record. The Warriors were 6-21 overall last year and third in 3A District 3 with a district record of 2-4.
The Warriors basketball team is currently 4-6 on the season after a close 49-44 loss to Mora on Dec. 31. Their next game is on the road versus Escalante on Jan. 13. The Warriors are led by second-year Head Coach Tim Townsend. He was the eighth grade basketball coach for about seven years prior to this step up.
“I love the fact that I can give what knowledge I have of the game and hopefully be a positive impact on the life of some, if not all, of the guys," Townsend said.
What they lack in height, they make up for with speed, shooting, and the vertical leap of senior Jaquavis Brawley. The core group of starters has great teamwork and communication. The Warriors are working on building that team chemistry throughout the entire bench so they are consistently strong with all line-up configurations throughout the games.
“Our strengths are our tenacity, persistence, and the level of brotherhood that they show for one another. These guys play buzzer to buzzer," Townsend said. “My goal is for the team to keep improving day by day and game by game, and for myself to become a better coach as well.”
Team Leaders: Gabriel Silva averages 5.0 rebounds per game. Isaiah Silva averages 22.0 points and 5.5 assists per game.
