The Warriors improved to a 5-9 record with those two wins. The Warriors have had a busy schedule, with four games last week. Including this week’s Tuesday match, that makes for five games in eight days. The team started out the busy week with a 7-0 road loss in their first district game to the higher-ranked NMMI Colts on Tuesday. They showed up for their home game versus Rehoboth Christian on Thursday ready to go though.

“It was probably the best full game I’ve seen them play in three years.” Head Coach Fred Berger said after the Rehoboth game.

The Socorro team was communicating well and running hard all through the game. It was still 0-0 at halftime in the Rehoboth game. Rehoboth struck first, but the Warriors fought back to get two goals of their own and hold on for the win, 2-1. First, Kyle Berger got an assist to Derek Acosta who scored a goal, and then Acosta returned the favor and got the assist to Kyle Berger for the team’s second goal. The Warriors were able to carry that momentum into the next day against Deming.

“We came out there confident after the Rehoboth win. I told our kids, just play with the same intensity as they did against Rehoboth.” Fred Berger said.

Ben Watkins and Derek Acosta scored goals for the Warriors in the 2-0 victory over Deming. Kyle Berger got an assist in the game as well. Coach Berger gave additional shoutouts to the team and players after.

“They’re really tired right now because this is their third game. So we’re trying to get these kids to stay hydrated, to eat well, to sleep well, especially tonight. But yeah, we’re dealing with a few injuries and just tired kids now, but they went out there and they really, really played well.” Fred Berger said.

Deming is a bigger Division 4A school. So it was a proud win for the Warriors.

“We hadn’t beat them in four years, Deming. The last couple of years, we’ve gotten hit pretty hard by Deming. So it was good to see our kids come together and actually play a really, really good game. So happy for them. Danny had a great game. Derek had a really good game being really aggressive. Kyle, or course, he’s always the leader out there, and we appreciate how he places the ball. So good to see.” Fred Berger said.

Coach Berger and the team had hoped to make it three straight wins, but the tiredness and injuries caught up to them. On Saturday, Sept. 27, they still held the higher-ranked Cottonwood Classical Prep team to only two goals in the 2-0 loss.

They played at home on Tuesday, Sept. 30, versus Hatch Valley for their second district match of the season, but lost a close one in overtime 4-3.

Next game:

Saturday, Oct. 4: away versus Ruidoso (district) at 11 a.m.
