Rainy conditions on Friday forced some last minute changes for the cross country meet in Belen on Saturday, Sept. 20. Much of the original course was rerouted Saturday morning to avoid the muddier sections, and these changes backed up the scheduled starting time by 30 minutes. The fog had mostly given way to sunny and humid conditions by the time the boys varsity race started at about 9:30 a.m. None of this stopped the Socorro Cross Country group from putting on a very competitive showing this past weekend.

“I was really pleased with how the team ran given the change in the course that morning, the muddy/sandy conditions, and the delayed start of the boys varsity race. We talk a lot about controlling what we can and letting go of the rest, and they all did a great job doing that on Saturday.” Head Coach Beth Cadol said.

The Socorro High School and Middle School XC teams had a total of seven top-ten finishers, plus a couple of 11th place finishes and a 12th place finish. Additionally, the girls varsity team placed second overall.

“The Girls Varsity team placed second ahead of all the bigger schools except Organ Mountain, which is an impressive finish--especially since this marks the midpoint of the season, we’ve been pushing hard in practice and the Run-a-thon was just last weekend.” Cadol said.
