SMS Braves Football

The seventh-grader Braves traveled to Los Lunas last Wednesday, Oct. 8.

“Man, I am extremely excited for our kids. They knew Los Lunas was gonna be tough. I told the kids not to worry about who they are. Do the little things that we have been coaching all year. And our kids did. They fought hard.” Head Coach Avalos said.

Just before halftime, the Braves right there with the Los Lunas Tigers. Then the Braves attempted to punt from their 30-yard line, but a high snap set the Tigers up for a touchdown and a two-point conversion. The Braves were down 22-14 at half, and that became the final score as well due to rain and lightning.

“1:30 in after half we get the ball back. We were headed straight to the end zone when they called the game.” Head Coach Avalos said. “Blankenship, Jayce, and Andres shine like always, but our OL were playing like men. Gonzales, Chase, Andres Marquez, O’Toole, Jiron, and Troy. Good group of kids who are not selfish. We played as a team.”

The Braves were scheduled to play one more game:

Wednesday, Oct. 15, at home versus Snell Middle School (Cobre) at 6 p.m.

Cross Country

Alamo: The Cougars XC teams had the week off and were able to stay and enjoy the Indian Day Celebration in Alamo. Their next meet for the junior high teams will on Friday, Oct. 17, at the NM Middle School Meet hosted by St. Pius X in Albuquerque. The Alamo varsity runners will be in Albuquerque the following day, Saturday, Oct. 18, for the Academy Extravaganza at the Albuquerque Academy.

Socorro: The Socorro XC teams were at the Los Lunas Invite on Saturday, Oct. 11. It was a big meet with some big schools.

“Our girls team had a bit of rearranging in finish order--everyone is fine, but the takeaway is that we are strong and deep, and it’s exciting to know that any one of these girls can step up when someone has a bad day. We still placed 4th as a team, right where I would have hoped to finish in this size of a meet.” Head Coach Beth Cadol said.

The Los Lunas meet was the last meet on the season’s schedule for the Socorro middle school XC boys and girls.

“The boys ran well, too, and competed all the way to the finish line. My highlight of the meet was the middle school team, who all raced the best I’ve seen and ended their season with a strong kick at the finish.” Cadol said.
