SMS Braves Football
The Braves opened their season at home against a big Moriarty Colts team. They were down 14-0 at half-time and only gave up six more points in the second half. The final score was 20-0. The Braves still made some big plays on offense, defense, and special teams. Braves Head Coach Avalos said that he is proud of the kids and the coaching staff.
“I believe we did really well against a team that was coached well and was very disciplined. I think our kids were a little timid of the size they had. Our kids here in Socorro never had contact until the seventh grade. About 85% of the kids we have are seventh graders,” Avalos said.
They were scheduled to play at Truth or Consequences Wednesday, Sept 10 at 5 p.m.
Socorro Warriors Soccer
Warriors won 4-0 versus the Robertson Cardinals on Sept. 9 for their first win. The 1-4 team goes to Belen on Thursday, Sept. 11, to play at 6:00 p.m.
SHS and SMS Cross Country
The teams were at Bosque School in Albuquerque on Sept. 6. Head Coach Beth Cadol said that SHS Cross Country had an “outstanding” day at the Dan Shaw Invitational.
“Season-best or big PRs for all the Varsity boys. Kyle Berger raced his first high school 5k with a patient confidence and passed the leaders with a mile to go for the overall win in 17:19.” Beth Cadol said.
The girls varsity team placed third overall, with Abby Cadol placing fourth and Anastasia Zagrai placing eighth individually.
“Sasha Zagrai finished ninth in the Girls JV race despite feeling under the weather,” Beth Cadol said.
In the middle school boys race, Tracer Montoya placed fifth.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, the XC teams will be here in Socorro hosting their second Run-a-thon fundraiser event. Support them by donating and or cheering them on at New Mexico Tech from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
