SMS Braves Football

The Braves lost at home to the Edgewood Eagles last Wednesday, Oct. 1.

They had a very slow start, giving up 24 points in the first half of the first quarter. The Eagles were up 24-0 at that point. The Braves matched the Eagles for the remaining three and a half quarters though and scored two touchdowns. The final score was 36-12.

#20 Iziah Chavez had two great open field tackles that prevented more touchdowns by the Eagles.

They were scheduled to play away versus Los Lunas on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.

Magdalena Junior High Volleyball Tournament

Seven schools and nine teams played in Magdalena for their tournament on Saturday, Oct. 4.

SMS Lady Braves seventh graders lost their matches and did not place, but the eighth graders won two before losing to Carrizozo and got 2nd place overall.

Magdalena Steers JH(B) team lost their matches and did not place, but the JH(A) got third place overall after a loss to the Carrizozo team.

The Alamo Cougars JH team won one and lost one in the pool play, then won a match against Reserve.

SMS Lady Braves Volleyball versus JH Magdalena Steers

The SMS Lady Braves hosted the Magdalena Steers junior high teams on Monday, Oct. 6. The Lady Braves won the night at home, as their 7th graders beat the Steers in 2 sets (25-23 and 25-7) and the SMS 8th graders also beat the Steers in 2 sets. The SMS Lady Braves were scheduled to play at home against Edgewood on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m. They travel to Quemado on Thursday, Oct. 9, to play at 3 p.m. The SMS eighth graders are now 8-4 while the seventh graders are now 4-8 on the season.

The Magdalena Steers JH(A) team was scheduled to play against Alamo on Tuesday, Oct 7, at 3 p.m.

High School Volleyball

Alamo at Magdalena-Magdalena hosted the Alamo Cougars on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Junior high, JV, and varsity teams all played. The Steers came away victorious in all matches that day. The Steers JH(A) team beat the Lady Cougars in two sets: 25-20 and 25-13. Steers JV won as well in two sets: 25-13 for each set. The Steers varsity team won their match over the Lady Cougars in three sets: 25-23, 25-14 and 25-18. The Lady Cougars were leading late into the first set, but once the momentum shifted the Steers’ way it never really came back to the Lady Cougars’ side.

Alamo-The 8-5 Alamo team travels to play against Vaughn for their first district match on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. Then, during their Indian Day Celebration, the Lady Cougars are at home against the Carrizozo Grizzlies for another district match on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m., with the junior high team starting at 4 p.m. All district games from here on out, as they then play at Mountainair on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m.

Magdalena-The Steers improved to 9-4 after Tuesday’s win over the Alamo Lady Cougars. The Steers had previously lost 3-0 to the Mesilla Valley Christian School SonBlazers on Thursday, Oct. 2. They travel to Pine Hill to play the Warriors on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m. Then they play at Oak Grove Classical Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m.

Socorro-The Lady Warriors lost at home 3-0 to Sandia Prep on Thursday, 10-2. The C team and JV team played each of their matches to three sets, but in the end those Sandia Prep Sundevils teams prevailed as well. They will travel on Thursday, Oct. 9, to challenge Quemado at 6 p.m. Then they are at home again on Saturday, Oct. 11, to host Monte del Sol Charter. The Lady Warriors are now 2-11 after traveling to Mountainair and beating the Mustangs onTuesday, Oct. 7. SHS JV won in two sets: 25-14 and 25-16. SHS varsity won in four sets: W 25-19, W 25-19, L 22-25 and W 25-21.

Soccer

The Socorro Warriors lost 3-1 to the Ruidoso Warriors on Saturday, Oct. 4. They played against Hatch Valley in Hatch on Tuesday, Oct. 7, and lost again, this time 1-0. That puts the team at 5-11 for the season, and 0-4 in their district. Next, they will host the Hot Springs Tigers at home on Saturday, Oct. 11, for a district game at 11 a.m.

NMT Rugby

Men’s: Their match scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11, at home against Northern Colorado was cancelled. Their next match will be on Friday, Oct. 17, at home. It will be against the NMT alumni rugby players for the 49ers celebration. Games are scheduled from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Women’s: They lost their match 36-17 versus NMSU in Las Cruces on Saturday, Oct. 4. Some UTEP players joined this modified game that was played as 15s for part and 10s for other parts.

“Overall, it was a good game. The girls really did well and showed a lot of improvement. They were great on defense and showed some class in offense too.” Coach Milaan Van Wyk said.

Their next match scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11, at home against Northern Colorado was cancelled as well. Their next match will be an NMT alumni game for the 49ers celebration; the men’s and women’s games will be played from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.
