SMS Braves Football
The Braves gave up a touchdown on the opening kick-off to the visiting Ruidoso team on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and Ruidoso kept that momentum rolling throughout the game.
Socorro did have a great catch and run for a touchdown by #13 Jayce Angel in the second quarter, and Coach Avalos is still trying to get everyone in for some playing time and experience.
“Trying to play a lot of non-starters on special teams,” Avalos said.
They lost to the Ruidoso Braves 50-6 in the home game.
They were scheduled to play at Tularosa at home Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m.
High School Volleyball
Alamo-The Lady Cougars are now 6-2 on the season. They suffered a close 3-2 loss to To’hajiilee on Tuesday, Sept. 16., and then they won a rematch against the Mescalero Apache Chiefs 3-0 on Sept. 20. The Alamo team travels to the Gallup area for the Rehoboth Invitational volleyball tournament on Thursday, Sept. 25. The Lady Cougars play Newcomb at 2:30 p.m. and Rehoboth Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday for the pool play. The tournament will continue through Sept. 26-27, with match times and opponents TBD by pool play results.
Magdalena-The Steers team won four matches in a row after their loss to Logan on Sept. 6. They won each of those 3-0, besting Mountainair, Carrizozo, and Capitan in last week’s play. The 7-2 Steers team was scheduled to play Cloudcroft at home on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 5:30 p.m. The Steers will travel to Ramah to play against the Mustangs on Friday, Sept. 30, at 5 p.m.
Socorro-The Lady Warriors lost to a highly ranked Belen team last week. The 1-8 team is getting a break from play for some rest before they host Deming at home on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. Their match against Monte del Sol Charter that was set for Thursday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. was postponed with the new time and date TBA.
Alamo Cougars Cross Country
Alamo junior high and varsity teams traveled to Rio Rancho on Saturday, Sept. 20, for the Rio Rancho Jamboree. Junior high and varsity teams will be traveling for that event. Official results were not in yet. Their next meet will be the Nick Martin Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 27, at East Mountain High School. Only the varsity runners are scheduled to compete then.
Socorro Warriors Soccer
The Socorro soccer team traveled to Aztec on Friday, Sept. 19. The Warriors scored a season-high five goals to beat the Aztec Tigers 5-1. Kyle Berger had two goals and two assists; Easton Montoya, Derek Acosta, and Javi Leon each had a goal; Ben Watkins had two assists. They improved to a 3-6 record with the win. The Warriors had four games scheduled for this busy week.
Tuesday, Sept. 23: away versus NMMI, a district match.
Thursday, Sept. 25: at home versus Rehoboth Christian at 3 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 26: at home versus Deming at 4 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 27: away versus Cottonwood Classical Prep at 1 p.m.
NMT Rugby
Men’s: The game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, was cancelled as Colorado College did not make the trip to Socorro and forfeited. The NMT ruggers will travel to Golden, CO, and play against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, Sept. 27.
