SMS Braves Football
The Braves lost at home to Tularosa last Wednesday, Sept. 24. Coach Avalos noted that there were a couple of big plays from Jayce Angel and Sevano Quezada, and gave additional shout-outs to a couple of other players.
“One of the kids that I’m really excited about is Tanner Winders, playing outside linebacker position. Another kid that’s really starting to shine offensively, starting to figure things out, is Jason Blankenship. He plays our tight end position.” Avalos said.
They were scheduled to play at home versus Edgewood on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m.
SMS Lady Braves Volleyball
After playing their last four matches on the road, the Lady Braves finally got to play at home again on Monday, Sept. 29, versus Estancia. Both teams won in a sweet return to their home gym. Seventh graders are now 3-5 on the season after winning 2-0: 25-23 and 25-22. Eighth graders are now 5-3 after winning a close finish 2-1: W 25-8, L 25-19, W 15-12. The teams travel for the Magdalena junior high tournament on Saturday, Oct. 4.
High School Volleyball
Alamo-The Lady Cougars are now 8-3 on the season, currently tied for the best record among Socorro County teams. The Alamo team traveled to the Gallup area for the Rehoboth Invitational volleyball tournament Sept. 25-27 and recorded a 3-2 win and a 3-0 win over Hozho Academy, but lost 3-1 to Reserve in the finals. They finished second place in their division in the Rehoboth tournament. The Lady Cougars get a bye week to rest up before traveling to Magdalena to face the Steers on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The two teams competed in a pool play match during the Magdalena tournament, with Magdalena winning that unofficial match.
Magdalena-The Steers’ four-game winning streak ended last Tuesday, Sept. 23, with a 3-1 loss to the Cloudcroft Bears. A slow start in the first two sets against the Bears resulted in 25-19 and 25-16 losses. The Magdalena girls reset and won the third set 25-21. Then the girls took the fourth set down to the wire, but the Bears edged them out 26-24 in that set to win the match. The Steers are now 8-3 after beating the Ramah Mustangs 3-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 30. They will travel to play Mesilla Valley on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m.
Socorro-The Lady Warriors lost at home 3-0 to Deming on Saturday, 9-28. The 1-10 team lost at home versus Bosque on Tuesday, Sept. 30, but the C team and JV team came away with wins. They will play at home again on Thursday, Oct. 2, versus Sandia Prep at 6 p.m. Next week they will travel to Mountainair to play against the Mustangs at 5:30 p.m on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
Cross Country
Alamo-The Alamo varsity team traveled to East Mountain High School for the Nick Martin Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 27. Those results were not yet available. However, in the previous meet on Sept. 20, the Rio Rancho Jamboree, Pherrell Herrera got 13th place in the boys varsity race with a time of 18:35.1 and Lakaya Secatero got 20th place in the two-mile girls middle school with a time of 13:52.3. They will be at the Socorro Rodeo Grounds for the Socorro Stampede on Friday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m.
Socorro-Many Socorro XC runners went to the Desert Twilight event in Mesa, AZ, on Sept. 26. The SHS freshmen girls were exceptional in the Small Schools Girls Freshmen 5K run, with the team finishing first overall and Makenzie Smith finishing ninth individually. Socorro’s Cross Country teams will host their only home meet of the season on Friday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m. The Socorro Stampede will take place at the Rodeo Complex and be followed by the Community 5K fundraiser at 6 p.m. Runners looking to participate in the 5K may sign up online: https://runsignup.com/Race/NM/Socorro/SSR5kFallSeries1
