Both the Alamo and the Socorro varsity XC teams ran at the Academy Extravaganza at Albuquerque Academy on Saturday, Oct. 18. This was a huge XC meet with dozens of schools and hundreds of runners.
Alamo-The Alamo Cougars ran in the 1A-2A race. There were 22 teams and 187 runners in the boys varsity race, and on the girls side there were 15 teams and 117 runners. The boys top finisher was Pherrell Herrera at 22nd place with a time of 18:04.53. The boys team finished 19th of the 22 teams. The only Alamo girls varsity runner, Ania Torres, had an impressive 16th place with a time of 22:43.35.
Alamo will head to Cliff, NM, for the Gila Valley Invite on Friday, Oct. 24.
Socorro-For the boys 3A race there were 126 runners and 17 teams. Several of the boys made great strides on personal levels.
“I was very proud of how the entire team ran at Academy. It was a solid performance across the board--with some big new PRs from Rylan, Liam, and Paul--but more than that everyone ran a smart race and kept their mental game in check.” Head Coach Beth Cadol said.
The girls 3A race had 104 runners and 12 teams. The top Socorro finisher in the girls race was Abby Cadol at 18th place with a time of 22:03.44. Kathleen Johnson, Anastasia Zagrai, Mackenzie Smith, and Breanne Lucero came in close enough behind Abby to carry the team to a sixth place team finish, which is their best finish ever at the Extravaganza.
“The girls team placed sixth out of 12 teams, which is our highest finish ever, and a credit to all nine of them for working together and not giving up. This one is more significant because we were racing all 3A teams that we’ll hopefully see again at State.” Cadol said.
The Socorro XC teams get the weekend off and a welcome reprieve before the district meet in Cobre on Friday, Oct. 31. Only varsity runners will be competing for that big meet on Halloween, with races starting at 3 p.m.
