Magdalena Steers football players were named to the All-District team:

#27 Ky Stephens, #22 Matthew Lopez, #7 EJ Lucero, #81 Kanaan Stephens, #9 Nathan Bruton and #13 Prescott Herrera.

Ky Stephens was also recognized as the Offensive MVP for District 2 of six man football.

The Alamo Cougars are still waiting on a district meeting to see about recognizing players for their efforts.

Socorro Swim Team

The SHS swim team’s first scheduled meet was cancelled due to a heater being broken. The Peter B. Barney Memorial Relays were set for Nov. 15 at the ABQ Academy Natatorium. They went to Gallup on the 22nd instead to make up for it.

“Small team today, six boys and two girls. But we got second overall.” Cody Johnston, coach for the girls team, said.

The boys team got second overall with 198 points, while the small girls team was fifth overall with 44 points. Combined, they were second overall with 242 points.

Notable results (finals times shown):

Boys 200 yard freestyle: Riley Sewell, first place, 2:10.30.

Boys 50 yard freestyle: Ben Watkins, first, 24:08; Connor Johnston, fourth, 28:31; Rylan Hicks, seventh, 28:73; Jacob Carrillo, eighth, 28:77; Dymek Arendt, tenth, 29.61. SHS had five top ten finishers out of 23 competitors in that race.

Boys 100 yard freestyle: Sewell, first, 54.55; Watkins, second, 56.56; Hicks, fifth, 1:05.56; Carrillo, sixth, 1:06.15; Arendt, ninth, 1:09.55. The Socorro boys are strong in freestyle, with five finishers in the top ten out of 16 competitors in this 100 yard swim.

Boys 200 yard freestyle relay: first place with a finals time of 1:48.35 with Sewell, Arendt, Hicks and Watkins swimming.

Girls 50 yard freestyle: Breanne Lucero, 13th, 34.41.

Girls 100 yard freestyle: Maeve Sturgis, fifth, 1:20.51; Breanne Lucero, sixth, 1:20.78.

Girls 100 yard backstroke: Maeve Sturgis, sixth, 1:47.56.

The next meet for the SHS swim teams will be at Highland High School in Albuquerque on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

SMS Braves basketball

The Braves traveled to Hatch on Thursday, Nov. 20. The Braves seventh graders won by two points to improve to 1-1 on the season. The eighth graders only lost by six points, as they did in their very close first game of the season. The eighth graders fall to 0-2 on the season.

Their next games are on the road against Valencia on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Seventh graders play at 4 p.m. and the eighth graders play at about 5 p.m.
