Magdalena-The Magdalena Steers finished up their season 14-9 overall and second place in their district at 3-3. Two home wins at the very end helped them wrap up the season on a strong note.
The Steers hosted the Animas Lady Panthers on Thursday, Nov. 6, and won 3-0: 25-14, 25-16 and 25-11. On Friday, Nov. 7, the Steers beat the Reserve Lady Mountaineers 3-1 (W 25-23, L 26-24, W 25-19 and W 25-21) in the final match of the season for the Steers. Magdalena had lost earlier in the season to Reserve, so this second match was a redemption victory for them.
“Even though we didn’t quite get to the state tournament this year, I was happy with our record and happy with the growth that every girl on the team showed. We will have a few kids represent our all-district team, and they are very well deserving. I wish we had more time, but now we shift our focus on continuing to grow stronger towards better outcomes.” Head Coach Micheon Shellhorn said.
The Magdalena varsity volleyball team was 13-10 overall and 1-5 in its district last year, so this year’s overall and district records showed modest improvements over last year’s records. The future is looking bright for this group of young players who gained lots experience this season.
Alamo-The Lady Cougars finished up their season with the best record among Socorro County teams this season at 16-4. They also swept their district to finish first with a 8-0 record. Their last match of the season was a 3-0 (25-10, 25-10 and 25-8) victory over the Corona Cardinals at home on Thursday, Nov. 6. During the season, the Lady Cougars won 52 of all the sets played, while losing only 15.
Alamo will head to the NM State Tournament and will face the Springer Red Devils on Thursday, Nov. 13, at noon. The match will take place at Bernalillo High School. Springer finished their season at 15-8, but they go into the tournament bracket with a higher seeding than the Lady Cougars: seventh seed while Alamo is 10th seed for Class A.
