Steers looking for success after switching to 6-man football

Football is alive and well again in Magdalena, and it’s thanks to the Steers’ decision to play six-man football this season. Magdalena was forced to cancel its first game last year because it didn’t have enough players to field a team.

Fast-forward to last Friday, when coach Danny Daniels had 25 players available.

“We’ve got plenty of players, but we now have to learn how to play six-man football because it’s a lot different than eight-man,” Daniels said.

The Steers took it on the chin against Logan in their season opener. Still, there were notable moments for Magdalena and some missed opportunities.

After skipping last year, Joseph Zamora returned to the gridiron and was a force on both sides of the football field. Running back Ayden Herschbach showed flashes, and receiver Jeffery Stuteville is learning how to run downhill.

Magdalena’s most significant hurdle will be learning how to make open-field tackles. Quarterback Shane Montoya (also a top defensive player) had to throw on the run, and Daniels was forced to consider his offensive options. Regardless of the outcomes, Magdalena will be exciting to watch this year.

The 2024 Steers’ roster includes--Shane Montoya, Matthew Lopez, Jayden Piasso, Quarol Monte, Javen Tafoya, Nathan Bruton, Paul ChavezLopez, Tristan Alvarez, Kaanan Stephens, Ky Stephens, Joseph Zamora, Ayden Herschbach, Jeffery Stuteville, Damian Franco, Kobe Mexicano, Jaime Munoz, EJ Lucero, Micah Lucero, Jerry ChavezLopez.
