Student-Athlete Spotlight: Kyle Berger
Socorro High School senior Kyle Berger is having a busy fall sports season. Kyle has played nearly every minute of every Warriors soccer game so far this season and is the team leader in goals and assists for 19 overall points. He has returned as the place kicker for the Warriors football team once again, scoring extra points and sending kick-offs into the end zone for touchbacks. Also, this year he joined the cross country team and quickly achieved success.
“Kyle Berger raced his first high school 5K with a patient confidence and passed the leaders with a mile to go for the overall win in 17:19. He’s tripling sports this fall, which is a testament to his athletic abilities and mental fortitude.” Cross Country Head Coach Beth Cadol said following the meet at Bosque School in Albuquerque on Sept. 6.
In addition to the three sports he is playing now, he expects to compete in track and field in the spring. When asked which was his favorite, Kyle was quick to say soccer. He prioritizes soccer, and makes it to cross country meets and football games when the timing doesn’t conflict with soccer. He’ll watch sports, but mainly just soccer and his favorite team, Real Madrid. Soccer camps, trials, Albuquerque clubs, playing with the Tech soccer team, and so on.
“Definitely soccer. It’s just the hardest, the most fun. That’s my best sport, and that’s what I hope to go to college for, to probably NMSU.” Kyle said. “I’ve been going to a lot of their camps lately. I’ve gone to like, three or four in the past two years, and then I’m probably gonna go to another two or three this year just to get my name out there.”
Kyle’s father, Fred Berger, is also the head coach for the soccer team. Both of Kyle’s parents can be seen at nearly all of his sports events, cheering on Kyle and the Socorro teams.
Kyle not only excels at sports, he’s a really solid student academically as well. He is taking a pre-college algebra class now, and hopes to take a college algebra class next semester. Even welding was a big part of high school for him, until last year when it could no longer fit in his schedule.
“I’ve probably kept around a 3.7 GPA throughout the four years in high school.” Kyle said. “I like science and a little bit of art, but science probably the most.”
When he’s not at games, or practices, or at the gym working out to build muscle mass for sports, or watching sports, he enjoys nature, ancient history especially along the paleontology lines, and “a little bit of” video games.
“I like hiking. I like going into nature. I like nature, fossils. Just finding them, or just looking at my grandpa’s collection. I like that a lot.” Kyle said.
Returning to the current sports season, Kyle has some goals for himself.
“I want to get the Offensive Player of the Year for soccer, and then definitely all state for soccer. I want to get scholarships, that’s kind of it. I don’t care about as many accolades. If I can just get scholarships, I’d be happy with that. And then for cross country, I hope I can get top five in the state. Top five in the state would be pretty good for first year ever. Football, maybe like a 45-48 yard field goal, hopefully.” Kyle said.
