The Alamo Lady Cougars varsity volleyball team has a six-game winning streak going. The last match they lost was against the neighboring rival Magdalena Steers team. Since that loss, the Lady Cougars started district play and have been on a roll ever since. Helping to lead the way is senior and captain, #5 Tisha Mexicano.

Alamo Lady Cougars Head Coach Lyndy Torres has plenty of positivity to share about Mexicano’s work ethics and game mentality. Torres says that Mexicano has a great head on her shoulders, she’s willing to work hard, and that she’s coachable.

“She can play any position if I asked her to. She takes feedback and makes corrections. She is a leader by example. She never complains and she always brings 100%.” Torres said.

Mexicano’s volleyball skills were recognized when she was named All Tourney in both the Magdalena and Rehoboth volleyball tournaments. Her strengths go beyond physical abilities though.

“Tisha is so fun to have on the team. She has a positive attitude and has fun. She definitely makes the time spent with her fun. Tisha brings happiness to the team.” Torres said.

With only two regular season matches left, then playoffs, the volleyball season is nearing its end. Although their playoff outlook is very good and they’ll have more games, the Lady Cougars are feeling the time rushing past.

“I have enjoyed the two years of coaching Tisha and learning alongside her. She makes us laugh and I am really going to miss her next year. Soon, we will be working hard in basketball season.” Torres said.

Basketball games start about three weeks into November, so it’ll be a busy month for Mexicano. Basketball tryouts and practices are beginning even though the volleyball season is still going. With the volleyball team doing so well, they have their sights set beyond just districts. The New Mexico state volleyball tournament will be from Nov. 13-15, with exact times and locations TBA. As much as Mexicano has fun with volleyball, she says she might like basketball more.

Looking beyond the sports seasons, and her senior year, Mexicano’s goals are to continue her education and hopefully continue playing sports.

“My goals are to go to college and I want to study business. I’m not planning to, but I would want to play college sports.” Mexicano said.

Mexicano is taking advanced classes to prepare for college, but her favorite class is team sports. In her free time, one of her favorite things to do is to work out. Sports are very important to her, and she likes to share her enthusiasm and experience with those around her.

“Enjoy every moment of high-school, especially sports, because it comes to an end in a blink of an eye.” Mexicano said.
