Turkey Trot 5K--running and giving on Thanksgiving
The Socorro Striders and Riders (SSR) ran their annual Turkey Trot 5K on Thursday, Nov. 27. The sunny November morning would’ve been perfect for a 5K without the chilly wind, but the blustery weather didn’t stop the 50 plus people from showing up on Thanksgiving.
Runners of all ages ran that day, including families running together. Socorro locals, high school students, former Socorroans, Tech students and some folks from Texas showed up for the trot. Several dogs even completed the course that day.
“This event is usually one of our bigger events of the year and this year was no different. We get participants from all over, many visiting family from out of town and looking for something fun and active to do Thanksgiving morning. We also get quite a few of our local SSR regulars and they often bring visiting friends and family.” Sara Roberts Demorest, Secretary for SSR, said.
This 5K is a fundraiser event, with all proceeds going to the Socorro Storehouse. Race participants paid $5 or a gave food donation for entries. Some gave both and some gave extra. Altogether, SSR raised $254 and about two full boxes of food for the Socorro Storehouse.
“SSR is a very small, volunteer-run club. It’s both exciting and slightly overwhelming when a lot of people turn out but, in the end, we are thrilled to have so many people come run with our group here in Socorro.” Demorest said.
Fastest males (times in minutes:seconds):
1) SHS Cross Country alumni Andrew Moellenbrock, 22:15.
2) SSR regular Ben Adam, 23:16.
3) Current SHS Cross Country runner Liam Demorest 23:30.
Fastest females:
1) Local runner Mary Pinnell, 26:58.
2) Local runner and longtime SSR organizer Kim Schaffer, 27:09.
3) SHS Cross Country Alumni Jackie Perez, 29:27.
This wrapped up their fall 5K series for the year, but they will return with more runs when the weather warms up again.
“The Turkey Trot is our final race of the Fall Season. We now go on hiatus until our spring events. We’ll start planning dates and prepping for those in December.” Demorest said.
Demorest also wants the community to know that SSR welcomes runners of all backgrounds and ability levels.
“We do often have people racing for the best times, but we also have folks doing their first 5ks, running/walking back from injuries or illness, getting into fitness for the first time, children running with parents and teenage athletes running in their off seasons. We strive to be inclusive and welcoming to you wherever you are in your running journey and we are here to support you and cheer you on.” Demorest said.
