Warriors Soccer Players named to All-District teams
The Socorro Warriors had five players named to All-District teams for their performance on the field this season. Kyle Berger and goalie Danny Leon were named to the first team. Ben Watkins, Derek Acosta and Isiah Trujillo were named to the second team.
“Now that the season is over, we as coaches have time to look back upon our season and reflect upon what we see as good and where we can improve. We look at our athletes and we want to applaud them for their hard work.” Head Coach Fred Berger said.
Kyle Berger led the Warriors team in scoring with 15 goals and 16 assists for 46 total points. Goals count as two points each while assists are one point each. Acosta was second on the team for points with eight goals, six assists and 22 total points. Ben Watkins played defensive and midfielder positions mostly, but still had five goals and five assists for 15 points. Trujillo almost always played back as a defender, but even he was able to get up and score a goal this season.
As goalkeeper, Danny Leon had 91 saves in 18 games this season for an average of 5.1 saves per game. The goalie had four shutouts as well. He also scored one goal this season in a game that he was able to play forward for a little while.
In addition to first team All-District, Kyle Berger was also selected to play in the All-Star Team Game for the green team. The red versus green game consists of 32 senior athletes from classes 3A-5A who are considered “the best of the best.” That game will take place at the Albuquerque Public Schools Soccer Complex on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 12:30, and the boys will play on field #2.
“Socorro has seen a second athlete in the past two years make this team, which is an impressive accomplishment for the program.” Fred Berger said.

“Unfortunately, all those that have worked hard don’t get the recognition they deserve due to the amount of athletes vying for spots on the All-District and All-State teams.” Fred Berger said to acknowledge the efforts of the other Warriors players.
The Warriors team finished the season with a 7-13 overall record and 2-6 record in their district for a fourth place finish. The records don’t fully reflect how well the team played this season. They lost eight of those matches by only one goal, and two of those losses even went to overtime. Four of their district losses were by only one goal, including one of those overtime games.
Seniors Kyle Berger, Trujillo and Javi Leon will be moving on, but the rest of the roster is underclassmen who got a lot of playing time and experience this season to prepare for next year.
