The Warriors and Lady Warrior wrestling teams continue to record impressive wins with a sweep of a home meet in Socorro and a fourth-place finish in the prestigious 2023 GIRLS Conflict in Cleveland.

Socorro ripped off big wins at home against defending state champion West Las Vegas and three-time champion Cobre on Jan. 4, with the Warriors outscoring Cobre 60-12 and West Las Vegas 48-16. The Lady Warriors handed Cobre a 36-12 loss.

The 2023 GIRLS Conflict was an excellent finish for Socorro, considering 33 teams from four states participated in the event.

Lady Warrior Sasha Gonzalez came away with gold in the 120-class with her first place coming via a fall (3:47) in the first round, a 15-0 win, and a 6-2 decision and 3-1 decision in the championship match.

Ally Martinez was the next highest individual finisher with a third place in the 152-class. Martinez recorded a fall at the 2:28 mark of her match. Jada Castillo was 4th in the 107-class, while Jayden Kayser was 5th in the 114.

The Warriors’ Isiah Estrada came away with a 5th in 107, while Patrick Woods was 6th in the 133.

Socorro’s first home meet of the season went from a quad to a tri-meet when Saint Pius could not make the trip, and the Warriors and Lady Warriors came away with dominating team wins.

Against Cobre, the Warriors Isiah Estrada and Damian Otero were winners by fall.

“Damian Otero in the 215s had one heck of a match, and he really got the crowd going,” coach Joel Partridge said.

The 215-class also highlighted the meet against West Las Vegas as Caden Moreland stepped up from the 189-class to face a bigger and heavier opponent that he grappled with and never allowed a point in a 3-0 win.

Estrada, Angel Perez, Kane Johnson, Patrick Woods, and Brian Armijo all won their Las Vegas matches by fall, and Cenyon Scarborough was an 8-3 victor by decision.

Socorro is hosting the annual Sammy V wrestling tournament this weekend, and it’s an excellent opportunity for wrestling fans to take in some of the best action in the state. The 12-man wrestling bracket format will have weigh-ins starting at 8 a.m., and the action gets underway about 90 minutes later.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students. Children 5 and under are admitted free.
