YOUTH SPOTLIGHT: Socorro County 4-H

Socorro County Extension office gave an annual report to the City of Socorro. Some of the highlights from their year included.

Annual Banquet: Over 100 youth, parents and community members attended the annual banquet to recognize and celebrate the hard work of 4-H youth and volunteers in 2023-2024. Not only does the banquet celebrate 4-H in Socorro County but serves as a leadership experience for the Socorro County Council Officers. The youth team plans, organizes and serves as the Emcees for the evening.

Roundhouse: 4-H Day at the Roundhouse Twelve Socorro Youth had the opportunity to develop their citizenship, leadership and communication skills and share the positive impact that 4-H has on them.

School Enrichment: Aquaponics offers students an engaging way to explore nature’s cycles and learn about animal and plant care.

Aggie Next STEP is an eight-week program that focused on helping students to develop skills and career goals to persist through school and help them successfully transition to high school and various higher education and career paths.

4-H STEM After School & SMS MESA Plant the Moon Challenge: The Plant the Moon Challenge is a unique and innovative program where 35 Socorro students were tasked with designing and implementing science experiment to examine how various vegetable crops could potentially grow in lunar soil.

4-H Skills School: Skills School brings hands on lessons in science, agriculture, STEM and leadership to the City of Socorro Youth Center participants weekly.

Southwest District 4-H Contest: Socorro will host wide variety of 4-H contest for 7 counties, bringing in around 200 visitors to Socorro June 17 and 18.
