Between the aroma of roasting pork, illuminated storefronts, holiday music, a parade full of twinkling lights and Whoville charm, Socorro’s holiday season will kick off in full force Friday, Dec. 6.

Festivities officially begin at 4 p.m., when the fire department matanza starts serving on the Plaza and a DJ begins playing under the gazebo. The stroll and parade themselves get underway later, around 6 p.m.

This year’s Holiday Light Parade theme is “The Grinch Came to Socorro.” Floats, walkers, and community groups are encouraged to design Grinch and Whoville-themed entries.

The parade will line up near Parkview Elementary, travel the length of California Street, and conclude downtown at the Plaza where Santa will be on site for photos.

The luminaria stroll will take place throughout the businesses surrounding the Plaza, each hosting a New Mexico artist or musician for the evening.

For the Socorro Fire Department, the matanza is far more than an excuse to eat. It’s a way to raise funds to buy gifts for kids. Each year, the department works with the school district to identify students whose families are deserving of holiday assistance. Last year, the firefighters were able to give to 70–80 children, Socorro Fire Captain Daniel Pacheco said, and they hope to increase that number this season.

“The main purpose behind this is providing for the children of Socorro,” he said. “They are our future. If we can help take some of the stress off families and bring joy to this community, then we’ve done what we set out to do.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the fire department or on the day of the event, though early purchase is encouraged due to limited servings.

“We want everyone to come out, walk through the businesses, enjoy the music, and celebrate,” Director of Tourism Cheyenne Cortez said. “Everything is free. Pictures with Santa are free, too—just bring your phone.”

Applications to participate in the parade are available on the Visit Socorro Facebook page or at the tourism office and will be accepted until Dec. 5.
