What started as a family pastime has grown into a beloved local business with statewide recognition.

“It’s just a family tradition,” Tony Ortiz, who helps manage sales and production, said. “My mom and dad, back to my grandparents, used to make us jerky all the time. We decided to give it a try as a business, and we’ve been going ever since.”

The shop, run entirely by family members, offers seven flavors of jerky, including its award-winning green chile variety.

In 2023, Ortiz Jerky claimed the title of Best Green Chile Jerky at the New Mexico State Fair’s Jerky Showdown, beating out competitors from across the state.

“Our green chile jerky is definitely the most popular,” Ortiz said. “Salt and pepper is the favorite for people who don’t want chile, but green chile is what everyone comes back for.”

Ortiz Jerky prides itself on sourcing local ingredients. The chile comes from Rosales Farms, and the meat, bottom and top round cuts, is purchased and sliced at John Brooks. Everything is processed and packaged in-house, maintaining the family’s commitment to quality and local authenticity.

“We consider it a local product because we process everything right here at the shop,” Ortiz said. “The chile is certified New Mexico chile, and the meat is from a local store. We want to support local businesses just like people support us.”

Beyond the storefront, Ortiz Jerky ships orders nationwide and participates in events across New Mexico, from craft fairs to rodeos. The business also supports community fundraising efforts, partnering with local schools and organizations to help raise money.

“We’re more than happy to work with anyone who wants help with fundraising,” Ortiz said. “We want to give back to our community in all aspects.”

For the holiday season, Ortiz Jerky is offering a December special: three large bags for $50, a $10 savings. Gift baskets and custom orders are also available, Ortiz said to just give them a call, and they will put together custom orders.

“We notice a lot of last-minute orders before Christmas,” Ortiz said with a laugh. “But that’s okay, we’ll make it happen.”

Ortiz Jerky, located at 405 N. California St., has been serving handcrafted beef jerky since 2012, moving to its current storefront in 2015.
