SOCORRO HIGH’S Second-generation homecoming queen, Roberta Pino, and King Shannon Milligan, have a lot in common. Both Pino and Milligan are point guards in basketball who will soon have to stow their crowns, slip on their Nikes and work up a sweat running pre-season wind sprints. Not that they are adverse to running. Pino runs on the Lady Warrior track team and may be the only 5-1 homecoming queen in America who also throws javelin. Milligan, 5-8, is a rare three-sport letterman. He’s one of the leading scorers on the Warrior soccer team and an outfielder in baseball in addition to his starting point guard duties. He is also the recipient of a Presidential Academic award. Students picked the queen and king, who were crowned Friday night at halftime of the Warrior-New Mexico Military Institute football game.

THURSDAY MARKED THE first literacy parade held by Socorro’s Parkview school. Children dressed up and paraded around the halls to encourage reading. September was Literacy month, and the elementary children decided to celebrate by having a door decorating contest with a reading theme and picking out their favorite characters from books to dress like. The whole school was involved but according to Marian Roya, the school librarian, the kindergarteners were the ones who really got into it, dressing up as the Three Little Bears and Goldilocks to The Three Blind mice.

SOPHMORE QUARTERBACK Jorrell Mirabal recorded more than 200 total yards of offense, and junior linebacker Anthony Pino returned a fumble for a touchdown to help give Magdalena a 57-6 win over Mescalero Apache in its regular season finale. With the win, the Steers improved to 9-1 overall and 4-0 in District 3 8-man, giving Rodney Leal a district title in his first season as head coach. The Steers took control of the game early on as Mirabal took his second run of the evening in from 16 yards out to give Magdalena a 6-0 lead.
