NEARING COMPLETION is the city’s major expansion of its public library. Librarian Dorothy Holmes said recently that dedication ceremonies have been set for mid-December, commemorating also the 51st anniversary of the library’s founding. Furniture is on order for the big attractive new south room, said staff, which has been running a box-to-borrower operation during the months of construction, will be moving books and equipment into final locations. New stucco is applied to the older parts of the building, matching that on the wing just completed. The inconveniences have all been to the staff, and library patrons have met the same friendly welcome and helpful assistance as always, this year. The library also sponsored its usual busy summer program for kids. Mrs. Holmes reports that generally things have progressed smoothly, although she did mention the day when workmen were gently opening the archway between old and new buildings and some supporting 2x4’s weakened allowing the adobes above them to fall.

A LUIS LOPEZ MAN lost his home after a fire destroyed his small recreational vehicle on Interstate 25, north of the Lemitar exit. The man who lived in the camper and his cat were not injured. The man, a retired oil field worker who lives on disability, watched as the Socorro Fire Department doused the camper. The man blamed the fire on a water pump that went out and then started overheating. “When I came (out of a building) after making a phone call to a wrecker, I saw the smoke and thought, I hope it isn’t mine,” the man said. “By the time I got there, it was (burning) good. We couldn’t put it out.” The man said everything he owned was in the 1978 Chevy vehicle.

THE NEW MEXICO Bureau of Geology’s Mineral Museum had a special grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony as a way of kicking off the 2015 Mineral Symposium. According to Director and state Geologist Virgil Lueth Friday’s reception drew over 300 people. “We had 251 registered for the Mineral Symposium,” Leuth said. “There were a lot of Tech people and a fair number of Socorro people. It was great.” He said the two silent auctions were very successful and the proceeds will be used “to buy more rocks.”
