THE NEW MEXICO State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Socorro. The incident occurred in the south part of town. State Police agents and a crime scene team are involved in the investigation process, said a New Mexico State Police Information Officer. Albuquerque television stations reported the shooting involved an officer with the Socorro County Sheriff’s Office, and that a person was transported to the hospital. The State police would not confirm the agency the officer was employed by, or if the shooting was non-fatal.

THE MAGDALENA FOOTBALL team saw its season come to an end last Friday as they dropped a quarterfinal road game at Gateway Christian, 56-6. The Steers finished the season at 10-2 and won the district 3 8-man championship in Rodney Leal’s first year as head coach. Magdalena, who should return 15 players next season, has gone 20-3 over the past two seasons and hasn’t dropped in a district contest since 2013.

SEPTEMBER 30, 1975

JO ANN GUTIERREZ, a 1975 graduate of Magdalena High School, recently pledged Zeta Tau Alpha sorority at Eastern New Mexico University. Zeta Tau Alpha was founded in Farmfield, VA., in 1988 on the beliefs that scholastic ability, good citizenship, and development of the complete person are an integral part of the college coed’s life. The sorority was founded on the ENMU campus in April of 1962 and since then it has grown to become a major part of university and community life. Miss Gutierrez is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin C. Gutierrez of Datil.

MORE THAN 100 guests with some coming from Arkansas gathered at the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology cafeteria to honor Dr. William “Bill” Hume who retired today. He spent more than 40 years teaching or as an administrator with 11 years at the University of New Mexico and 29 years at New Mexico Tech. He was presented with an engraved plaque and other gifts during the party. During his tenure at Tech, Dr. Hume served as assistant to the president, Dean of the College, deputy director of the Research and Development Division, and professor of physics. He was recently named vice-president for administration by the Tech Regents. Upon his retirement, he will become professor emeritus in physics.

OCTOBER 27, 2001

AIR FORCE AIRMAN Jacob Petalcu has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Agustin and Soledad Petalcu of Socorro and is a graduate of Socorro High School. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force Mission, organization, and customs and received special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
