AFTER 27 YEARS in business, former Hillcrest owners Fred and Ruby Huebner have retired, selling out to their son and daughter-in-law, Don and Joyce Huebner, new owners and managers since August 1. Raised in Socorro, Don is a SHS graduate who later migrated to Oklahoma City, Okla., where he worked as a machinist for Pomco, Inc. His wife, Joyce, a native Oklahoman, was formerly employed as payroll coordinator for South Community Hospital in Oklahoma City. Both are happy to be back in Socorro and are looking forward to meeting old and new friends as Hillcrest managers. Fred and Ruby Huebner have lived in Socorro for the past 28 years. A year after their move here, they bought Hillcrest Market from store owners Mr. and Mrs. William McCarty. At that time, it was quite a bit smaller than its present size. Over the years, the Huebner’s have remodeled and rebuilt, expanding the market area at least four times its original size. After nearly three decades with Hillcrest Market, Ruby and Fred say they have enjoyed doing business in Socorro, where they have found “friendly people and good customers.”

SOCORRO FOOTBALL FANS will have a chance to think of legendary football coach Eduardo (Eddie) Castaneda every time they walk into Warrior Stadium. More than 200 people celebrated the football field’s dedication in honor of Castaneda, who died earlier this year. In December 1977, the coach took the Warriors to their first and so far, only, state championship. Twenty-four years later, at the biggest and last home game of the season, Eddie Castaneda was honored with an unveiling of the scoreboard. Members of the 1977 championship team, along with Castaneda’s family, spoke about the coach’s life and what he meant to the community and the school. The ceremony ended with the Castaneda family unveiling the scoreboard, and a fireworks display.

SOCORRO CITY CLERK Pat Salome spent part of his last days in office surveying the aftermath of the historic blizzard that hit the town and other parts of New Mexico. Mother Nature was helping as city crews helped clear some of the streets. The sun did much of the work as Socorro dug out from an official 16 inches of snow, with some residents reporting as much as 20 inches. 16 inches of snow is believed to have set a record. Magdalena recorded 21 inches of snow. He said city crews concentrated at first on areas of most importance, such as the area around Socorro General Hospital. Most of the main roads were passable, although icy conditions persisted on some roads.
