THE SOCORRO ELECTRIC Cooperative, Inc. is mailing 2400 checks for a total of $29,500 as patronage refunds to members of record as of 1956, Joseph Gallagher, manager, announced. The check for the greatest amount -$1770- is going to New Mexico Tech, the largest consumer of electricity in the co-op’s system. Gallagher said distribution is predicated on the amount of electricity purchased by each member. The $29,500 is for 1956 only. The patronage refunds began in 1945. The distribution is made annually by authorization by the board of trustees.
BOB BURSEY, manager of the Chamberino Gin in Dona Ana County, inspects a cotton bale wrapped in cotton bagging instead of the usual burlap. The gin will pack more than 4200 bales in cotton bagging costs 28 cents more per bale than jute or burlap, but it’s worth it, Bursey says. “It’s much neater, “he said, “and it opens up another market for more cotton.” Bursey estimates the cost at $3.48 for the bagging and ties. The bagging patterns cost $2.58 a piece from the Ralls-Tex Mill in Ralls, Texas.

ABOUT $200, which had been saved for three years, was stolen from a piggy bank on Ake Street, Police Chief Polo Pineda reported. Nothing else was taken. The money was mainly in half dollars and quarters. Pineda said there was no evidence of a break-in, but the house had been unlocked for a while.
AIRMAN BYRON L. WAXLER, son of Mrs. Helen W. Waxler, has been selected for training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, as an Air Force transportation specialist. The airman, a 1965 graduate of Socorro High School, recently completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

VENCESLADO L. TRUJILLO, son of Mr. and Mrs. Luis Trujillo of Socorro, has been promoted to airmen second class in the U.S. Air Force. Trujillo is an electrician at Minot Air Force Base. He is a member of the Strategic Air Command, the nation’s combat ready intercontinental missile and bomber force. The airman is a graduate of Socorro High School.
PEDRO CHAVEZ, employee of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife for 22 years, receives the U.S. Department of the Interior Commendable Service Award from Wayne Gueswel, refuge manager. The award was presented at a dinner at the refuge before Chavez’s formal retirement date of Nov. 15. About 45 refuge personnel and their families attended. The personnel presented Chavez with an engraved watch. Chavez was a maintenance employee for most of his 22 years of service, and in the early years of the refuge’s development was a construction lead man. He and his family have moved from San Antonion to Albuquerque.
