DECEMBER 9, 1975

AMOUNTING TO several hundred dollars were several recent incidents of vandalism involving rocks being thrown through windows. On Dec. 1 a window was broken at the Mountain Bell telephone office. On Dec. 3 damage to a window at B&J Silversmith was estimated at $150. On the same evening a window was broken at Pino Plumbing Co. On Dec. 4 at the S&M north end car lot windshields of two cars were broken and one cab dented, with estimated damage for all three set at $500

A TRAILER HOUSE in Florida was burglarized on Nov. 21. Taken were a television set valued at $450, $50 worth of turquoise jewelry, and a pistol valued at $60. Entrance was gained through the back door. 

RONALD OLSON of Socorro, N.M. was one of two outstanding New Mexico 4-H members to be awarded $500 college scholarships by Santa Fe Railway in Chicago during the 54th National 4-H Congress. Presenting the scholarships to Ronald and Audra Oliver of Alamogordo was John S. Reed, chairman and chief executive officer. Santa Fe has supported the 4-H program for 53 of its 54 years and currently provides 27 scholarships and 60 educational awards to outstanding 4-H members residing in 13 western and southwestern states it serves.

NOVEMBER 17, 2001

MELONIA A. TORRES of Lemitar has attained certification as a National Certified Counselor through the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. Torres works at New Mexico Tech as the manager of career services. She obtained her master’s in counseling and educational psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno. She is licensed as a mental health counselor (New Mexico Therapy Practice Board.) Also, she is licensed as a school counselor (k-12) for the state departments of education in Nevada, New Mexico and Utah.

NOVEMBER 28, 2001

A SAN ANTONIO man was killed after a car he was working on fell on top of him, said Sheriff’s Department detective Anthony Lovato. The man, 49, was working on his car when it rolled from the ramps and landed on top of him, according to reports. The man had put the car into park and lifted the rear wheels onto two small ramps. According to detective Anthony Lovato, the man was removing the drive shaft, which transmits mechanical power. When he removed the drive shaft, the car rolled forward. There were no blocks placed in front of the car. Lovato said friends discovered the man and called 911. The man was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly after he arrived. 

DECEMBER 22, 2001

THE STAFF AT El Defensor Chieftain surprised Nancy Jaramillo with the Woman of the Year award at the town Christmas program. Jaramillo, a teacher at Magdalena schools, was chosen from about 30 women nominated by community members as part of El Defensor Chieftain’s contest. With tears in her eyes, Jaramillo thanked everyone and reminded the crowd of what they should be thankful for. El Defensor Chieftain Publisher Thomas Guengerich presented Jaramillo with a framed plate of page 1B of this issue before a standing-room-only crowd at the start of Magdalena Elementary School’s annual Christmas program.

FEBRUARY 25, 2016

TWO SOCORRO SCHOOLS were among the top five finalists in the Science Olympiad state championship held at New Mexico Tech. More than 600 students from 25 high schools and 25 middles schools competed in a variety of science-based events held across campus. Socorro High School came in at third place in the high school division and was first overall among New Mexico public schools. Cottonwood Valley Charter School did just as well, taking third place in the middle school division. Sarracino Middle School came in at 23.
