EL PUENTE DEL SOCORRO, a local domestic violence shelter, is one of several shelters sharing a $10,000 donation from the New Mexico State Police Association. Dorothy Larkin, director of El Puente, said the local shelter will receive $525 of the total. She said the money comes at a good time for the shelter, which is converting a part of its building into a children’s playroom and is in need of a toys, a television and a VCR. The shelter provides a place to stay for women and children who are the victims of domestic violence in their own homes. Larkin said the center is funded by federal and state sources and by donations and grants.

NO POWER. Some parts of Socorro were without electric power for about an hour just before noon on Thursday. Source of the problem was a three-phase power line near the headquarters for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, according to Lupe Vega, general manager of the Socorro Electric Cooperative. Vegas said a short burned the center phase of the line, which then fell on the neutral line and caused the outage. Full power was restored by 1:15 p.m.

THE 42nd ANNUAL OLD TIMERS REUNION rodeo and events may be postponed or canceled this year, due to the Village of Magdalena’s loss of water. The board of directors for the Old Timers Reunion held a special meeting Tuesday evening at Village Hall in Magdalena to determine the fate of this year’s activities. No decision was made on the fate of the 42nd annual event after much debate and bickering among the community members present. Some community residents were advocating for the cancellation of the reunion, while others suggested simply postponing the event until later this summer. Some business owners and others were passionately opposed to either idea, stating that their annual revenues would be severely hampered by the cancellation of the event, and that even postponing would do damage. Some business owners fear they would not survive the year without it. The decision at the end of the meeting was to wait to make a determination about the reunion until next Monday when the Village Board will hold its regularly scheduled meeting.
