Bone recovered in search is not human, the search for Andew Dixon continues

Truth or Consequences Police Detective Shane Jeffers said there have been no new findings since an anthropologist confirmed that a bone recovered during a December search was not human.

Dixon was last seen on July 28. His vehicle was found abandoned the next day along Highway 1 near mile marker 33 in Socorro County. Jeffers said previously that the car appeared to have run out of gas and showed no signs of foul play.

Jeffers said he believes Socorro Search and Rescue is planning another search in the area where Dixon’s belongings were found during the December operation, but he has not yet been contacted with a date or details. The items recovered helped narrow the search area, he said, but did not clarify whether Dixon is alive or deceased.

“It definitely helped pinpoint a more precise area to continue searching for additional evidence,” Jeffers said. “But it unfortunately doesn’t help us determine what happened to Mr. Dixon. It leaves a void we still have to try and fill.”

Jeffers said it is possible Dixon may have discarded clothing in the area in a similar manner to how the vehicle was left, given his likely state of mind at the time, believed to be due to Dixon’s history of mental illness.

He also said tips have come in from other states. Jeffers said he has followed up on every tip he has received, but none have been confirmed to be Dixon. A few possible sightings in the Trinidad, CO, area remain unverified.

Jeffers said he has contacted the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and shared Dixon’s information and missing person flyer, but has not received confirmation that anyone matching Dixon’s description has been located.

With no new leads, Jeffers said the most important thing the public can do is remain alert.

“What would be most helpful right now is having people continue to be on the lookout,” he said. “If they see something, I’m encouraging them to say something. If anyone knows anything, please come forward so new information can be investigated.”
