Socorro Public Library plans colorful, community‑focused events in March
The Socorro Public Library is gearing up for a lively month of programming in March, with events ranging from a Dr. Seuss birthday celebration to the annual Holi Festival of Colors, along with ongoing adult education and literacy programs.
Library Director Chelsea Jones said March is one of the most engaging times of the year for young readers.
“The first week will be the most fun,” she said.
The month opens with a celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2, featuring literacy‑focused activities and stories inspired by the beloved author.
Two days later, the library will host one of its most anticipated cultural events: Holi, the Festival of Colors, Love and Spring. The celebration runs March 4 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and highlights the Indian holiday that marks the arrival of spring, the end of winter and the blossoming of new beginnings.
Socorro’s Holi celebration includes traditional snacks, henna temporary tattoos and the throwing of brightly colored powders. Jones said the color‑throwing remains her favorite part of the event.
“The act of throwing colors symbolizes the washing away of negativity and preparing for new beginnings,” she said. “It’s a great way to bring people of all ages together to celebrate the coming of spring and of course get messy.”
She said the event offers families a chance to learn about Holi traditions and Hindu origins while fostering unity and joy.
Tax Help New Mexico will continue offering free tax preparation through March and April for residents 65 and older and for those with incomes under $67,000. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the library.
The library’s book club meets on Thursdays at 4 p.m. and provides free books and lively discussion.
Spanish classes, held in the library’s Literacy Room at Finley Gym, continue on Mondays at 2 p.m. The free classes are open to all levels, including beginners.
GED preparation classes also meet on Mondays at 2 p.m. and are free to the public.
English as a Second Language instruction is ongoing as well. Interested residents can inquire at the library for enrollment information.
Jones said she hopes the mix of cultural celebrations, literacy programs, and practical services will give residents of all ages a reason to visit the library this spring.
