Socorro youth basketball league champions
Socorro's youth basketball program finished up their seasons with championship games at the Finley Gym on Saturday, Feb. 21.
7-9 year-old Sophomore League:
The Celtics won the 7-9 year-old sophomore league championship game with a 69-48 victory over the Lakers last Saturday. The Celtics were 10-1 for the season, with their only loss being by one point to the Lakers earlier in the season. The Celtics were coached by Derrick Anaya and his father Paul Anaya.
“It felt good to get that final win, the players worked hard all season to get better individually and as a team. They wanted that rematch desperately and talked about it all season. It was very rewarding for me and my father to view the growth within each player from beginning to end. Until next season, Go Celtics!!” Derrick Anaya said.
The Lakers finished second and the Blue Devils were third place.
10-12 year old Little League:
The Alamo Cougars won the 10-12 year old Little League basketball championship. The Cougars finished at an undefeated 11-0 record with their nail-biter 30-29 victory over the Tar Heels on Feb. 21. Virgil Sandoval, Kaland Secatero and Ricky Padilla coached the Cougars.
“It was a good game and the young kids worked hard, played hard, practiced hard and dedicated…to the win,” Sandoval said of the win over the “great” Tar Heels team.
“Thank you to the Alamo Wellness Center staff, and thank you to Socorro for giving us the opportunity to play.” Sandoval said.
The Tar Heels were second and the Warriors were third place.
