SOCORROAN JENNIFER ROSALES was recently inducted into New Mexico State University’s Sam Steel Society. The society honors the memory of Steel, who would have been the university's first graduate had he not been killed just months before his graduation in 1893. Rosales, a Socorro High School graduate, earned a bachelor’s in animal science; she plans to pursue a career in livestock production.
THE SOCORRO WARRIORS basketball team’s record fell to 6-4 after a 72-54 loss to the Deming Wildcats. The Warriors played a close game the first quarter, ending one point behind 13-12, but scored only three field goals in the second quarter. With 15 seconds left in the half, Warrior coach Gilbert Peralta came into the court to dispute a call with the official. Peralta received a technical and was tossed from the game. As Peralta walked off the court, assistant coach Greg Ezell approached the referee and was also slapped with a technical. Assistant coach Pat Salome took over for the rest of the game. Deming’s Jamie Dominguez finished the first half by making five of the six free throws that came as a result of the technical fouls. The Warriors played a better game in the second half, but they couldn’t stop the Wildcats’ momentum. Socorro senior Stephen Hall had 23 points on the night, including 12 from behind the arc. Josh Jiron added 15 points, Joseph Santillanes had nine and Sheldon Milligan had three. Senior Kedar Bhasker scored four before he was also ejected in the third quarter with another technical foul. Peralta and Ezell will miss the Warrior’s next game against Portales in the first round of the Stu Clark Tournament.

THE AMERICAN CITY Business Journals released the annual 2016 public university rankings, with New Mexico Tech slotted as 119th out of 477 schools, the highest ranking of all the state’s public institutions and just ahead of the other two New Mexico research universities, UNM and NMSU. The Journals, which is the parent company to the weekly Albuquerque Business First magazine, used a 20-part formula to analyze schools. The ranking criteria gave precedence to schools with highly selective admissions processes, strong retention and graduation rates, resources, low tuition and housing costs, faculty and student diversity, and economically robust communities.
