Magdalena’s basketball program was represented by three of their seniors in this year’s New Mexico High School Coaches Association All-Star games for Class 1A-2A schools. Jema Ganadonegro and Elia Cleveland were named to the red team for the girls’ game while Ky Stephens was named to the green team for the boys’ game. They played on Friday, March 20, at the Rio Rancho Events Center.

“I was happy for him to get recognized and have the experience of playing in an all star game. Those are great experiences for kids and making memories is important,” Magdalena Head Coach Jory Mirabal said of his player, Stephens.

The girls played first, at 3 p.m., after introducing all of the All-Star players and their coaches. Sara Sue Olney, Magdalena head coach for the girls’ team, made the trip to support her two players.

Both Magdalena girls provided impact plays that helped lead the red team to a 62-50 victory. Ganadonegro was wearing #10 for the game and scored five points for the team, including a 3-pointer. Cleveland was number #13 for the day and scored three 2-pointers for six points in the game.

The boys’ game followed at 5 p.m. The red chile was hotter in these two Class 1-2A All-Star games, and the red team for the boys out-shot the green team all game to take a 75-48 win. Although Stephens’ green team didn’t come away with the win that day, he still contributed on the court. Wearing number #33 for the game, he scored two points at the free throw line, grabbed several rebounds and had at least one block.

“He has been a great young man to have in our program. He is an excellent teammate. Leads by example and I just wish we had one more year with him,” Mirabal said.
