Firefighter Mathew Jojola wins first boxing match
Socorro firefighter Mathew Jojola won his first ever boxing match in the Battle of Blue versus Red on Saturday, March 14. This event was Classic’s first annual bash and took place at the Encanto Event Center in Roswell. Jojola faced off against a correction officer from Roswell, Mauricio Feliciano.
The fight was originally scheduled for Jan. 24, but it was postponed due to inclement weather. When Jojola finally got his chance at his first fight this past weekend, he displayed a solid three round performance in the ring. Jojola got an early knockdown in the third round out of the three, 90-second rounds.
“I feel really good about it, definitely have a lot more to learn. It was a good fight throughout, I was just fortunate enough to force a stoppage due to bleeding midway through the third round,” Jojola said.
Jojola said that he is not sure what’s going to happen in his boxing future just yet, but he does plan to keep going with it.
“I will continue to train with Mr Lucero and possibly see if there are any tournaments down the road to enter. It seems like more guys already wanna train, so that's an awesome thing in itself too,” Jojola said. “It was just an honor to represent the Socorro Fire Department and bring home the belt for the fire side.”
Jojola’s trainer, Humberto Lucero Sr., traveled to Roswell to coach and support him through this important first boxing match. His corner also included Stephen Jojola, his father, and John Jojola, a cousin. Mathew Jojola gave special recognition to his corner and how well they supported him leading up to and during the fight.
“Like they've been doing it for years,” Jojola said.
