The Socorro Warriors and Lady Warriors track and field teams traveled to Truth or Consequences on Friday, March 13, for the Mike Tooley Invitational at Hot Springs High School. 35 Socorroans competed that day against student-athletes from nine other schools, earning multiple PRs and three state qualifying performances.

“Socorro had a great day at the Hot Springs meet,” Head Coach Beth Cadol said.

Warrior Kyle Berger on his way to first place and qualifying for state in the 3200 meter run on March 13 in T or C.

The morning started out cool and pleasant, but delays had the meet starting later than the scheduled 10 a.m. time and the day warmed up quickly. Despite the warm temps, the Warriors placed second as a team and the Lady Warriors placed third.

The Lady Warriors had 21 top ten finishes on the day, with 11 of those being top three finishes. The Warriors had 29 top ten finishes, and 13 of those were top three finishes.

“19 out of 35 athletes hit all-time personal bests in at least one event. Sienna's vault of 8-0.00 now ties her for second place in the all-time SHS Girls Track Records.” Cadol said.

Sienna Bunning just missed clearing 8-6.00 (feet-inches) in the pole vault event after having qualified for the state meet at 7-6.00 and then PRing with a first place 8-0.00 finish. She said she had only cleared 7 feet 6 inches once before.

“I'm really excited, and it was a big PR day,” Bunning said.

Julian Aldrich was third place that day in discus and qualified for state with a throw of 121-1.75. Aldrich said that he was within two feet of qualifying in the shot put event as well.

Kyle Berger also qualified for state in the 3200 meter run with his first place time of 10:18.15.
