Socorro Warriors baseball prepares for district play
The Warriors will begin their district play on the road against the Hot Springs Tigers on March 31. Then they will host Hot Springs for a doubleheader on April 3. Socorro will also get three games against each of its other district opponents: Tularosa, Cobre and Hatch Valley.
The Warriors varsity team is currently 2-6 on the season; JV is 2-1. Varsity suffered a big loss to the larger Silver school team at home on March 17, but JV was only down 8-7 that day when their game was called due to issues with the lights.
“You know, we need work. I think if we fine tune everything we should be okay,” Head Coach Lawrence “Scooby” Montano said.
They will get three more games in the NMMI Tournament to fine tune what they need to be ready for district. Their first game in the NMMI Tournament will be against St. Michael’s at 4 p.m. on March 26.
“[I've] been feeling really good about the season,” #7 Manuel Torres said. “I made a lot of improvements. Hitting wise, pitching wise, fielding wise, as well as my teammates. We've made a lot of improvements compared to last year.”
Torres feels confident that the team can improve on last year’s record based on what he’s seeing so far this season. In 2025 the Warriors had a 6-17 overall record and were 3-9 in their 3A District 3 for fourth place. Even after the tough loss to 4A Silver, he knows his teammates have his back and that they can bounce back.
“Thank you to my teammates for backing me up while pitching and being there, just being teammates,” Torres said.
