REWIND FOR JANUARY 29, 2026

NOVEMBER 13, 1975

“KORRALING” KIDDIES takes no effort at all in the new children’s store which had its very successful grand opening because the “Korral” is the center attraction of the brightly decorated store which Gwen and Judy, the new owners, have created with intent. And the store arrangement, the large stock of name brand kiddie clothes, the “Korral” play area, the stuffed animals and gift items are all for kids. There is even a gold-framed full-length mirror just the right kiddie height. Gwen and Judy are the lovely Richardson sisters and hometown girls who are mothers of young children. The mothers along with their neighbors, Will and Flo Orndorff got to talk about how there hadn’t been a store specializing just in tots for 20 years. The conversations developed into action. Mothers who visit the new store can shop leisurely for their youngsters as they play with a large variety of toys in the Kiddie Korral which has already become such an attraction that “un-Korralling” the kids is harder that keeping them “korraled”!

THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S office has suspended criminal proceedings against a former accountant charged with taking nearly $150,000 from the trust fund of the late Eugene Coulson, a doctor and former mayor. The man originally faced 49 counts of felony embezzlement for taking, according to his court file, $148,950 from the trust fund left to Coulson’s wife and children. The crimes occurred between June 1992 and October 1999. The man lost his certified public accounting license and can re-apply for a license in five years, his attorney said. His attorney also added that the man has been attending counseling on his own, without a court order.

EACH YEAR Socorro General Hospital gives the first baby born in the New Year a $100 gift certificate and a certificate stating they are the first baby of the year. This year that honor goes to Bailey Caroline Apachito, born Jan. 6. Bailey’s parents are Stacey Guerro and father Benny Apachito, from the Alamo Navajo reservation.

THE NEW Socorro County Detention Center off Highway 60 is a quiet place with the exception of the activity of a few people wearing hard hats putting finishing touches on the building. In about a month’s time, the $8.5 million, 96-bed facility on Enterprise Road will be buzzing with activity with about 70 inmates, 20 detention center staff, local and state law enforcement officers, attorneys and family members of the inmates. The biggest benefit of the new facility is that it will allow the county to keep all the inmates under its supervision at the facility. The new facility will include video booking and visitation rooms. It will also provide areas for arresting officers. The new jail also will have a larger kitchen and rooms for arrangements, attorney visits, counseling and classes. It also has an enclosed recreation area for inmates.
