While Spring doesn’t officially start until March 20, spring-like temperatures are already here, and the Socorro Striders and Riders are ready to start running with their Spring 5K series. They call their events “fun runs,” and the events are open to anyone in the community.

“Our 5k fun runs are for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned racer or run/walker just out for a jog. We love to see families and kids out there, too,” Sara Roberts Demorest, Secretary for the Socorro Striders and Riders, said.

The Striders and Riders hope that you will join them for one or more of their upcoming events, or even join them in organizing their events. They are able to keep entry fees for their runs low because of the efforts of their volunteers.

“We are always looking for volunteers or people to join the governing board of SSR. Putting the 5Ks together takes a handful of people and we are down to just a few long-time volunteers,” Demorest said.

SSR upcoming events

Feb. 21: Valentine 5K. The theme is to wear red, pink, or hearts, and to “bring your loved ones.” 9 a.m. at East Rd, which is next to EMRTC. $5

April 4: Easter 5K. They will have candy. The City of Socorro Rodeo and Sports Complex at 9 a.m. $5

May 2: Connor’s Causes, put together by the Johnston family. There is a 5K or a 1-mile option for this event to raise funds for cystic fibrosis research. 9 a.m. at the Socorro Plaza. $10

The Socorro Striders and Riders lend some support to the Connor’s Causes run, Demorest said, as well as helping out with other running activities in the community by spreading the word and volunteering.

Related upcoming running events

The Socorro Trail Running Series will have its annual La Jornada de las Quebradas 53K run this Saturday, Feb. 14, on Valentine’s Day. Some Striders and Riders volunteer for that event, and they put out messages looking for even more volunteers. The La Jornada run starts at 7 a.m. at the Bursum Spring Loop Trailhead.

Socorro Running Club members, past and present, at the start of last year's La Jornada de las Quebradas 53K run on Feb. 22, 2025. They participate in SSR events as well.

On April 18, the Socorro track and field team will be hosting a fundraiser at the SHS track. They will set up track and field events for community members to participate in. That fundraiser event will start at 10 a.m., with registration beginning at 9 a.m.

“Join them for their annual Community Track Meet where you get to compete in fun track events,” Demorest said.

The track and field fundraiser events include five individual run lengths (100 meter, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1,600m), two relays (4x100m and 4x400m), long jump, shot put and discus. All ages are welcome, and the cost will be $5 per event or $20 for unlimited events. Contact Head Coach Beth Cadol at coach.cadol@socorroschools.org to sponsor an event or for more information.

Cadol and the track and field teams are also hoping to honor coaching legend Charles Zimmerly that same weekend in April. Zimmerly was formally inducted into the 2026 New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 24 in Albuquerque. Cadol is working on spreading the word to SHS alumni to help organize and attend the reception for Zimmerly.

“I hope they can make it a double-header for the weekend: Community Track Meet plus Coach Z's HOF Reception,” Cadol said.

Registration for these Striders and Riders events will be available at https://runsignup.com/ by searching for “Socorro” on the site.
