The Socorro Lady Warriors took first place and the Warriors finished fifth in their first competition of the season. SHS played in the Turtleback Mountain Open at the Turtleback Mountain Sierra Del Rio golf course in the City of Elephant Butte on Thursday, March 19.

“Overall, I’m really proud of how the girls handled the first tournament of the season. For most of the team, it was their first time seeing Sierra Del Rio, so it was a great opportunity to get familiar with a course that will host the State Championship in May,” Kristen Griego, head coach of the girls’ team, said.

Individual results, girls:

Natasha Apodaca, second place, 93; Abbegail Munguia, third, 99; Kailyn Woods, fifth, 107; Zariah Silva, 10th, 131; Drew Lopez, 16th, 139.

“Finishing with four players in the top 10 and coming away with the team win is always a great way to start the season. We didn’t play our best golf, but getting that early look at the course was valuable and gave us some good insight into what we’ll see later in the year,” Kristen Griego said.

Individual results, boys:

Isaiah Silva, first (tied), 77; Tavin Benavidez, 25th, 98; Nazario Silva, 28th, 100; Josiah Barba, 29th, 103; Bowyn Romero, 35th, 108; Jacob Angel, 43rd, 119.

“The Socorro Warrior golf team had a bit of a rusty start to the season this past Thursday, starting the year on what will likely be the toughest course we face all season. With three returning varsity players and two new additions to the lineup, the boys battled through the round to finish in fifth place. Isaiah Silva tied for top individual honors to lead the Warriors. Overall, the tournament was a valuable learning experience and highlighted a few key areas we need to improve. We’re looking forward to bouncing back at our next tournament at Los Altos in Albuquerque,” Miguel Griego, head coach for the boys’ team, said.
